Poster Competition Judging Criteria

 

JUDGING CRITERIA FOR HBLL 2016 COLLEGE OF PHYSICAL & MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES POSTER COMPETITION

(Score 1- low, 5-high in each category.)

     

#1  Organization

1.   Clearly defined sections with labels, such as hypotheses or objectives, methods and results, conclusions.

2.   No more than one short paragraph for each sub-heading. Bullet point paragraphs are acceptable.

3.   Organization is logical with a clear flow of ideas from one heading to the next.

4.   Graphics and other visuals enhance presentation.

5.   Posters adhere to the size standard.

     

#2  Appearance

1.   Words are easy to read from an appropriate distance (3-5 feet).

2.   Language used in each section is clear, concise, and easy to understand. Poster is free from undefined jargon.

3.   Proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation is used.

4.   Poster is neat and appealing to look at.

5.   Visuals stand alone, i.e., they are self-explanatory.

     

#3  Content

1.   Focus is on a well-defined problem.

2.   There is a clear and concise statement of the immediate problem.

3.   Are unnecessary visuals included, e.g., complicating interpretation of crucial ideas?

4.   Visuals attractive and of high quality.

5.   The poster stands alone without any verbal explanation.

6.   Conclusions are supported by results.

Important Information

  • Posters will be on display in the Harold B. Lee Library's North Gallery on Level Two between the atrium and the Religion/Family History area (outside of room 2232 HBLL https://floormaps.lib.byu.edu/#2232) from October 3 to October 21, 2016.
  • Maximum poster size: posters cannot be more than 50 inches wide and 50 inches tall.
  • Posters must be printed on a single sheet. They will be hung up, not mounted on a cork board. No pins will be used for mounting.
  • 25% discount off of printing your poster at the Science & Maps Help Desk in the library. Printing at the Science & Maps Help Desk is not profit generating. They charge only for materials/ wear and tear. Normal color cost is $2.00 per square foot.
  • Due date for submitting poster: 5:00 pm Friday, September 30, 2016 at the Science & Maps Help Desk in the Harold B. Lee Library
  • Special open house: Submitter and his/her mentor agree to be present in the Harold B. Lee Library on Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 pm to discuss the research with visitors.
  • Prizes
    • First place: $200 campus gift card
    • Second place: $150 campus gift card
    • Third place: $100 campus gift card
  • Winners will have their posters displayed at the Science & Maps area during October and November 2016 accompanied by a photograph of the submitter and his/her mentor.
