LibGuides Guide: Getting Started: Creating New Guide

Style guide for HBLL librarians to create and publish subject guides

Creating or Editing a Guide

Creating a new guide

  • From your Dashboard page, click on "Home" at the top. Under "LibGuides Shortcuts", select either "Create Guide" or "Edit Existing Guide".
  • You can "Start Fresh" or "Copy Content" from another guide as a template.
  • Give your guide a title and brief description.
If you use an existing guide as a template, all of the content (tabs and boxes) will be copied into your new guide for use as is or for editing.
  • To allow other librarians to edit your guides (optional), under "Share Guide Content?", select "Internal".
  • Click on Create New Guide and you're ready to go!

Formatting your new guide

  • Color settings for all HBLL guides have been set by the HBLL Web Designer to give consistency to the guides
  • Do not use a different color scheme in specific boxes

Adding content

  • Content is added to guides using content boxes arranged on pages (tabs).
  • See Add/Edit Tabs for details on how to add more pages/tabs to a guide.
  • See Add/Edit Boxes for details on the different types of content boxes and how to add them to a page.
  • Look at guides by your colleagues for good ideas!

Unpublished, Private & Published

  • When you first create a guide, its Status is Unpublished. Other HBLL LibGuides authors can see what you've done, but no one else.
  • When you're ready to share the guide, you can change the status to PrivateIt still won't be listed among the HBLL LibGuides, but can be viewed by anyone to whom you give the URL: other librarians, faculty, etc.
  • When you're ready to make your guide public, change the Status to Published.

Your Profile Box

  • The PROFILE BOX you created will automatically appear on all your pages.
  • To hide it, delete the box. You can restore it anytime by creating a new Profile type box on the page.
  • You don't have to keep one on every page, ONLY on the home page.
