Search the BYU Library Catalog for BYU theses & dissertations. For other theses and dissertations, search the following database:

Subject Headings in BYU Library Catalog

A good way to do research on Classical mythology is through subject searching in the catalog. To do this, 

  1. Go to the Library's catalog
  2. Click on "Alphabetic Search"
  3. Enter a subject term (e.g., one of the terms listed below)
  4. Click on "subject"
Art and mythology Heroes Other mythologies, e.g.,
Goddesses Mythology Mythology, Chinese
Goddesses, Greek Mythology in literature Mythology, Egyptian
Goddesses, Roman Mythology-Comparative studies Mythology, Semitic
Gods Mythology, Classical Mythology, Sumerian
Gods, Greek Mythology, Greek Names of mythological figures, e.g.,
Gods, Roman Mythology, Greek, in art Argonauts (Greek mythology)
Names of individual gods and goddesses, e.g., Mythology, Greek, in literature Camilla (Roman mythology)

Most subject headings can be subdivided by "-Mythology," "In literature," "In art," "-Art." For example:

Apollo (Greek deity)-Art ["-Art" is used after names]
Goddesses in art ["in art" is used after topics]
Dogs-Mythology
Hercules (Roman mythology) in literature

Call Numbers for Browsing

Another way to approach the Library's collection is by browsing the shelves. Books including information on classical mythology can be found throughout the library, but the main areas are:

  • BL 300-325 (general mythology, including dictionaries) on Level 2
  • BL 700-815 (Greek and Roman mythology and religion) on Level 2
  • BL 820 (Greek and Roman deities) on Level 2
  • DE (Greco-Roman world) on Level 1
  • DF (Greek history) on Level 1
  • DG (Roman history) on Level 1
  • PA (Classical languages and literature) on Level 5

You can "virtually" browse the shelves using the catalog:

  1. Go to the Library's catalog
  2. Under "catalog searches" click on "Call Number Search"
  3. Enter one of the call numbers listed above
  4. Click on "search"
