Course Description

In Music Theory III we will cover extended chromatic music vocabularies and introduce impressionist techniques.  We will continue to explore the use and function of chromatic notes (and therefore, chords) within a given key.  This will include learning about new chords, such as the Neapolitan triad and Augmented Sixth chords, as well as learning about new functions for chords with which we are already familiar, such as linear embellishing diminished seventh chords.  We will observe how modulation to distant keys becomes possible through enharmonic reinterpretation of these and other chords.  This course will also include units on jazz harmony and Impressionism.
