Jorge de Sena at 100: A Symposium in Celebration of His Life and Work. November 13-14, 2019, Brigham Young University: Home

A guide for those interested in the life and works of Portuguese poet, playwright, novelist, short-story writer, essayist, and scholar, Jorge de Sena, to accompany the symposium held at BYU November 13-14, 2019.

Welcome

In 2018 and 2019, following his retirement from Brigham Young University's Department of Spanish & Portuguese, Dr. Frederick G. Williams made a sizeable donation of materials to the Harold B. Lee Library related to his decades-long work as a professor of Portuguese literature and culture worldwide.  Significant among the items he donated was a large collection of books by and about the Portuguese poet Jorge de Sena, Williams' mentor, adviser, colleague, and friend at the University of Wisconsin and later at the University of California-Santa Barbara.

This donation was serendipitous since it happened in the centennial year of Jorge de Sena's birth (1919).  Giving this coincidence, Dr. Matthew J.K. Hill of the Harold B. Lee Library, and Dr. Anna-Lisa Halling of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese, in cooperation with Fred Williams, decided to host a small symposium in celebration of Jorge de Sena's life and prolific scholarly and literary work.  We have invited people who knew Sena in life, and an expert on modern Portuguese literature and Sena's life and work, Dr. Francisco Cota Fagundes, professor emeritus of Portuguese at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

We hope this page will be a useful resource both to those interested in attending the events of this symposium, as well as to those interested in exploring Jorge de Sena's work beyond what is presented at the symposium.

Please join us on November 13-14 for one or all of the events of the symposium.
