Industrial Organization (Econ 476): Industry Codes

Sources for Industry Data for Econ 476

Why do we use industry codes?

The U.S. Census Bureau uses the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) to organize information they collect on businesses into sector and industry groups. Some government agencies, such as the SEC, still use the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code.

Many sources for industry reports and data are also organized based on these NAICS and SIC codes.  Knowing the code for the company or industry you are looking for leads to more efficient and accurate searches.
