In general, Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval is not required for oral histories, which consist of recording individual personal experiences. However, there may be exceptions. If the oral history interviews are done as part of a research study to collect and analyze data and draw conclusions about a group of people, then IRB approval may be required. If you think the oral histories you are conducting may acquire such approval, or if you are unsure, contact your institution's IRB office for more information. BYU students and faculty should contact the BYU Institutional Review Board (IRB).
