HBLL Photo Competition 2023: Submitting a Photo

Basic Requirements for Submissions

  • This competition is open to all currently enrolled students at Brigham Young University
    • Students may submit a photo individually or as a group (awards will be split among group members)
    • There is no limit to the number of photos a student may submit, however, each submitter is only eligible for one prize.
  • At least one of the submitters must take the photo or be present in it
  • Photos must relate to the theme and include a title and caption (200-500 characters) including:
    • A brief statement of the problem being solved
    • How the picture shows the solution to the problem
  • Photos may be edited or unedited (no photos created by AI)
    • See the Available Resources tab for editing resources
  • Photos may be of any aspect ratio (e.g., panoramic views are acceptable)
  • Minimum resolution is 7.2 Mpixels; recommended resolution is 12 Mpixels
    • The library will print and mount selected photos for display in an 8x10 size or larger
  • Photos must be accompanied by general location information (automatically captured or manually supplied)
    • The library will place photos in a story map
  • By submitting a photo, students grant the library permission to display their photo electronically and in physical displays

Judging Criteria

Judges include faculty and staff in the Science and Engineering department at the Harold B. Lee Library.  Judges will evaluate photos using the criteria below:

 0-2 points

It is unclear if the image illustrates the theme. It does not catch the eye or is not particularly interesting.

 3-6 points

The image feels only somewhat related to the theme. The subject of the image is interesting, but it fails to evoke an emotional response, tell a captivating story or cause the viewer to think in a new way about the subject.

 7-10 points

The image is a thoughtful and compelling illustration of the theme. In addition to catching the eye, the image evokes an emotional response, tells a captivating story and/or causes the viewer to think in a new way about the subject.

 0-2 points

The caption does not illustrate the theme very well, is difficult to understand, or is not compelling. It does not include a clear statement of the problem to be solved and the solution employed.

 3-6 points

The caption adds information related to the theme, but fails to evoke much of an emotional response, tell a captivating story or cause the viewer to think in a new way about the subject. The statement of problem and solution is cursory.

 7-10 points

The caption is a thoughtful and compelling illustration of the theme. Both the problem and solution are clearly stated.  The caption evokes an emotional response, tells a captivating story and/or causes the viewer to think in a new way about the subject.

 Composition

 0-2 points

The image quality is poor, or the subject matter is not in focus. Little attention is paid to framing, arrangement, color, or proper lighting of the subject matter, and one or more of these distract from the image.

 3-6 points

The image quality is good and subject matter is in focus, but at least some aspects of lighting, framing, arrangement, and color are not particularly appealing.

 7-10 points

The image is high quality and subject matter is in focus. Framing, arrangement, color, and lighting have all been well considered and are visually appealing.
