How To Laser Cut with the Makerspace

  1. Design your own file to cut or find a file online. See the "File Preparation" tab for more information.
  2. Decide what material you want your file to be cut from. You can bring your own material or use some of ours. See the "Materials" tab for more information.
  3. Email us your file at makerspace@byu.edu. Include the dimensions of your file, what material you'd like to use, and any other important information. If you'd like, you can bring your file to our desk on a flashdrive instead.
  4. We will add your laser cut order to our laser queue and get the job done as soon as possible. We'll email you with any questions or clarifications.
  5. Once your order is finished, we'll send you an email letting you know it's time to pick up your order, along with the total cost (laser cost + materials cost).
  6. Come to our desk on the fourth floor to pick up your order.
  7. Payment is due at pickup.
    1. We can take Cougar Cash and department cards (not department Visas) at our desk.
    2. If you are paying with cash or card (including a department Visa), let us know and we will send you an invoice to take to the main circulation desk. They can help you pay and will give you a receipt to bring back to us. We need a receipt before we can send you home with your laser cuts.

As of right now, no patrons are allowed in the room where our laser cutter is kept. When our new space is complete (est. Winter 2024), you will be able to watch the laser cutter in action! Thank you for understanding!
