This guide is designed to assist individuals and groups who wish to use the approx. 240,000 maps and 5,500 atlases and gazetteers, held in the Harold B. Lee Library Map Collection. Also included is a large assortment of online geographic resources
Atlas des Deutschen Reichs (Atlas of the German Empire)The Atlas des Deutschen Reichs by Ludwig Ravenstein (1883) helps in tracing the roots of families with origins in any part of the German empire from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Besides Germany, the maps of this atlas also cover the bordering portions of present-day Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, the Russian Federation, Slovakia, and Switzerland. Due to the large scale of its maps (1:850,000) and its thorough gazetteer of place-names, one can locate even small towns and villages on the maps in the Ravenstein atlas.

CIA World FactbookAlternate title: World Factbook. Provides a country-by-country listing of basic statistical and factual information. A few miscellaneous areas such as Antarctica and the West Bank are also included. Entries average two pages in length. Updated annually.
David Rumsey Historical Map CollectionFocuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America cartographic history materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented. The collection categories include old and antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, children and manuscript maps. Genealogy and family history can be studied on the maps.
Estonia Place Names DatabaseSince independence in 1991, Estonia has renamed a number of its towns and cities. Some, back to their pre-Soviet occupation names. This English searchable database, provides access to current as well as variant place names within Estonia and elsewhere. Once a query is submitted, maps are viewable by clicking on GeoNames in the Coordinates field. Details for each map pin are viewable by clicking on the pin icon next to the name listed below.
Find A County - National Association of Counties (NACO)This site provides several ways to locate any county nationwide. Selecting the state displays a county list. Naming the county takes you right to their information page. From there you can view the county in Google Maps, link to the official county web page, or email elected county officials.
Gazetteer to AMS 1:25,000 Maps of East GermanyThis gazetteer lists geographical place names for the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany), and provides along with the place name, its Designation or type, Grid Reference, Latitude, Longitude, and the Sheet Number to the Army Map Service 1:25,000 scale M841 series.
Geology of Britain ViewerFrom the British Geological Survey, this is a viewer for 1:625,000 and 1:50,000 scale digital geological maps. Click on the map to view a description of the geology. Also includes a geology key. The base map can be changed as well as layer transparency.
Historic Maps of New England and New YorkThe University of New Hampshire's Library's online collection of over 1500 USGS topographic maps includes complete geographical coverage of New England and New York from the 1890s to 1950s.
Historical Atlas of Islam CD-ROM
Historical County Boundary Maps (randymajors.com)Just type in a present day place name including the 2 letter state code. Select a year, and click go. The county boundary for that year will display. Click within the boundary and more information will display. You must use modern place names. By clicking the arrows on either side of the date, country boundaries will change in 10 year intervals.

Sanborn Maps (ProQuest)Sanborn fire insurance maps are the most frequently consulted maps in both public and academic libraries. Sanborn maps are valuable historical tools for urban specialists, social historians, architects, geographers, genealogists, local historians, planners, environmentalists and anyone who wants to learn about the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. They are large-scale plans containing data that can be used to estimate the potential risk for urban structures. This includes information such as the outline of each building, the size, shape and construction materials, heights, and function of structures, location of windows and doors. The maps also give street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. Seven or eight different editions represent some areas.

University of Texas-Austin, Perry-Castaneda Library Map CollectionThis site is maintained by the University of Texas at Austin and provides online access to approximately 4,000 maps for all regions of the world. Maps cover mostly the 19th and 20th centuries, although some represent time periods back to ancient empires. It also provides links to historical map web sites as well.

Utah Geological Survey : GIS Map DataGIS (Geographic Information System) data allow the user to create specialized maps in a computer environment by clipping the data to desired boundaries; stacking the data with other GIS data layers such as mineral resources, energy resources, cultural features, geologic units, or topographic features; or removing unneeded data. GIS data requires specialized software, which must be purchased or downloaded separately.
Yahoo MapsThis site offers maps for locating addresses and driving directions. It includes route maps, interactive destination maps, distance in miles, approximate travel time, and written instructions.
