LibGuides Guide: Getting Started: Adding Images

Style guide for HBLL librarians to create and publish subject guides

Adding Images to Your LibGuides

  1. In text editor, go to the place in a text box that you want to insert the image. Click on the image icon (picture of a tree).

  2. Click on the red link that says "Click to upload an image from your computer or reuse an image in your personal image library."

  3. This box also gives you the option to get an image from the web, by adding a URL for it (Image URL).  Remember that an image you link to from the web may not stay there forever.  PLEASE ONLY UPLOAD IMAGES FROM YOUR LOCAL FILES to your LibGuides Image Library.

  4. Click on the Browse button, navigate through your computer's files to the image file you want to upload, select the image, and click on Open. The file location should then appear in the Browse box. Click on the Upload Image button. The image will be added to your Image Library and will appear with all your other LibGuides images.

  5. Select the image from the gallery and click the Insert button. (To insert an image already in your Image Library, skip step #3.

NOTE:

  • You can also type the name of an image file in the Filter by File Name box to find it among your images.
  • If you upload a new image but do not want to insert it immediately, just close the Image Manager box and hit cancel.  The uploaded image will remain available in your Image Library for later insertion into this or other guides.

Aligning Images

Depending on how you want to align the image, you can then either leave the alignment at "Not Set" or change it.

Default Setting
If you leave the image alignment as "Not Set" (the default), any text you type will begin to the right of the image aligned with the bottom of the image. If it is long enough to wrap, it will continue underneath the image. This setting is generally not ideal, as it will leave a lot of white space.

Left-Aligned
If you want the text to appear next to the image, change the alignment drop-down menu to left. Notice that there is also more space between the picture and the text.  This is controlled by changing the horizontal space setting from blank, or 0, to a certain number of pixels. Again, if the text is long enough it will wrap underneath.

Right-Aligned
Alternatively, you can change the alignment drop-down menu to right.

Introduction

Images can be added to any text box in LibGuides or to the text section of other kinds of boxes.

Your LibGuides account includes an Image Library to which you can upload images to use in your guides.

As you add images to a box, remember:

  • size of the column and box
  • size and resolution of the image
  • avoid bad clip art
  • balance size of images with the amount of text
  • avoid big blank areas around images
  • add visual interest, avoiding all text only
  • if in doubt, ask for advice!
